Government to consider plans that will allow agency workers to replace rail staff who strike

Updated: Oct 4, 2022

Rail workers are continuing the planned 3 day strike from 21st June, due to work conditions, lack of pay rises in addition to proposals to cut thousands of rail jobs. A separate dispute over pensions and job losses are the main drivers for the upcoming national strike this month.

Due to the strikes, the Government are now considering plans to allow agency workers to replace rail staff who are on strike.

The move would require a law change after Tony Blair put a restriction on replacing striking staff with agency workers during his period as prime minister.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, advised that any such move would not affect "this particular set of strikes" but that "further measures certainly would come in during this particular dispute, if it can't be resolved".
